The complication suzanne young5/24/2023 Syphilis is most infectious during the first two stages. Let’s go over what we know about syphilis, who is most at risk, and what the standard treatments for it are today. If you do have syphilis, understanding this infection can help you recognize signs of the condition and prevent transmission. Understanding the symptoms and causes of syphilis can help you protect yourself. Syphilis that remains untreated for a long time can cause major damage to important organs, such as the heart and the brain. However, the earlier syphilis is discovered, the better. Someone can have it without showing any symptoms for years. Syphilis in people with vaginas is rising slightly more than in people with penises, though both groups are seeing an uptick in cases overall. In 2020, 133,945 new cases of syphilis (all stages) were reported in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Despite this, rates of syphilis are actually rising among several demographics in the United States. In fact, treatments are so well established that, at one point, it was thought possible to eradicate syphilis completely. People have been getting, treating, and surviving syphilis for hundreds of years. It can be hard to diagnose, but without treatment, it can cause serious damage to multiple body systems over time. Syphilis is caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum and is transmitted through sexual contact.

Threadneedle by cari thomas5/24/2023 She has spent her life repressing it, preparing herself for having it cut off by a group called The Binders when she turns sixteen, in order to protect herself from all of its dangers. Threadneedle is about a teenage witch named Anna, who has been raised by her aunt to detest and fear her own magic. That day was a while ago, but I was (for once) organised enough to write my thoughts as soon as I finished. I don’t think I’ve ever been so blessed by the book gods in my entire life and obviously, in the midst of my excitement, I had to read this entire book in a day. I saw it on Twitter, realised that I would die for a copy, and received an email the following day inviting me to review on Netgalley and giving me an automatic-approval link to it (so thank you so much to HarperVoyager for the e-ARC). I’ve decided that my reading of this book was fated. Gibson neuromancer5/24/2023 CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi opus also follows in the footsteps of Neuromancer in its analysis of the singularity – the theoretical point where human and artificial intelligence becomes indistinguishable. In the Delamain side quests, V must deal with the consequences of AI fracturing as he begins to question whether or not it’s worth being more than just a cab driver. In contrast, Neuromancer follows an ex-hacker whose defiance of his employer left him disabled and unable to access virtual reality.īoth materials are explicitly echoed in Cyberpunk 2077, speaking to the title’s genre pedigree. Both use the layer of abstraction offered by their futuristic settings to confront and challenge troubling aspects of our current reality.īlade Runner follows a group of Replicants who escape from their indentured servitude. Many see the birth of the modern cyberpunk genre as concurrent with the release of William Gibson’s seminal sci-fi novel Neuromancer in 1984 and Ridley Scott’s 1982 film Blade Runner. But like an archaeologist who discovers a relic of a bygone age to which no story is attached, Nestor cannot know. Which is it? The turning post for forgotten games of long ago, or a memorial of some forgotten man? Given the commemorative purpose of the race itself, the uncertainty is unsettling. Of a man dead long ago, or a turning post “As to the mark, it stands out you can’t miss it:Ī dry stump, a man’s height above the ground, Cling to the turning mark, Nestor directs, as translated by Robert Fitzgerald: As contestants line up for the chariot race, Nestor, the aged leader of the Pylians, gives his son Antilochus some unsought advice. Toward the end of Homer’s “Iliad,” the Greek hero Achilles organizes a series of athletic competitions as part of the funeral rites for his fallen comrade Patroclus. Sam’s parents tell him he’s welcome to try, but obviously expect him to be back home as soon as he gets a little hungry. Sam Gribley is a teen when he decides to run away from his home – a crowded apartment full of younger siblings in New York City – and try to live off the land in the Catskills, where his family owns, but has never visited, his grandfather’s old abandoned farm. I was very drawn to My Side of the Mountain because of George’s conversational tone, aided by Sam’s first-person narrative, and accompanied by sketches of things like plants, snares, and handmade fishhooks. Like Wild Trek, My Side of the Mountain is about someone living off the land, all alone – a topic that has always fascinated me, and continues to do so. Another beloved classic from that stack was the first book in this series, My Side of the Mountain. Some of them, like Jim Kjelgaard’s Wild Trek, went on to become lifelong favorites. When I was a kid, I found some of my dad’s childhood books stuck in a closet in his old bedroom at my grandparents’ house. Claymore manga vol 15/24/2023 Rather, they refer to each other as "warriors" or "comrades."Ĭlaymores are not necessarily more powerful than Yoma, being only half-Yoma themselves. The word is typically not used by the Claymores themselves when referring to one another. The name "Claymore" is in fact a term coined by the civilians on the island used to refer to these human-Yoma hybrids. "Claymore" is derived from the Scottish-Gaelic claidheamh mór, meaning "great sword." Claidheamh mór can be pronounced "cleiv-more." "Claymore" is a transliteration of the Japanese series title, "Kureimoa" (クレイモア, pronounced "kray-mor"). 3 Biology, appearance and characteristics. High fidelity nick5/23/2023 There's nothing wrong with the book, still one of my favorites, although it does feel dated - not just because so much of today's technology is absent, but the passage of time has not been kind to Hornby's pop culture references (there isn't even a mention of Ben Folds, who became a big part of Hornby's musical canon but hadn't yet recorded when High Fidelity was written). An unabridged audio edition was not available on Audible until recently, finally got a chance to listen to it, and - not at all what I hoped for. Read the book, saw the movie, watched the Hulu reboot, loved them all. The audio edition of High Fidelity? Not even in my top 5 audio listens of the month of May (and I only listened to seven audiobooks in May in whole or in part). My top 5 streaming TV series during the original COVID quarantine: Tiger King, Queen's Gambit, Star Trek Picard, Bridgerton, and High Fidelity. My top 5 books of the mid-90s: The Ice Storm, Into Thin Air, Harry Potter, Election, and High Fidelity My top 5 movies around 2000: American Beauty, Almost Famous, Amelie, Memento, and High Fidelity. The Dugout by Emily Childs5/23/2023 Specifically, this paper investigates the shifting relations between physical site and visual representation, or sight. In closely examining Life magazine drawings and photographs of the first explosion near Alamogordo, New Mexico, in 1945, as well as later tests on the Nevada Proving Ground, plus two popular atomic films – Split Second (1953) and Them! (1954), this master's thesis traces a historical shift in the cultural production, or signification, of “the desert.” Landscape is taken as a mediated category, a historical, metaphorical, visual, spatial, material, and ideological construct or practice. While previously pictured as a pristine wilderness or rugged national frontier, in the 1940s and 1950s, mass media images of atomic tests coded the American desert West as a technological and apocalyptic space. Along the way, it has accumulated a thick and complex layering of associations. Although often associated with blankness and vacancy, the desert West has been among the most heavily represented of postwar American landscapes. |
